Orthotics is the design, fabrication, fitting, and supervised use of devices that provide external support or assist weak or abnormal joints and/or muscle groups. Sometimes it is necessary to design a custom orthosis, other times the orthotist fits an off-the-shelf device to the patient's body or adds components to meet the specific needs of our patients.
Prosthetics is the design, fabrication, and fitting of custom made artificial limbs or other assistive devices for patients who have lost limbs. They are built to restore the appearance and functions of the missing body part. Technology and the skill of the prosthetics combine to produce a complex and sophisticated instrument. Patients facing these life changing events often consult with a Prosthetics prior to or immediately following surgery.
Young patients from newborns to teenagers and their families receive special attention from our professional staff. They work closely with parents and physicians of children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, scoliosis or other serious conditions to help establish the best treatment options.
Patients can quickly outgrow their orthotics or prosthetic devices during this time of rapid development. Typically we will see these patients every six months and make the modifications as needed. We teach parents to carefully monitor the equipments between visits. Some children will need more frequent clinical visits due to sudden growth spurts.
